Puzzle Ball challengepuzzle ball

Follow these directions:

  1. The challenge has 2 parts:
    1. to create clear directions on how to put one of these puzzle balls together.
    2. to put the puzzle ball together (after practicing) as a team in less than 2 minutes.

DO NOT TAKE THE BALL APART UNTIL YOU HAVE A PLAN FOR HOW YOU WILL PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN.

  1. Write down your strategy for taking the ball apart in a way that you will be able to put it back together again.
    1. What is your plan?
    2. Write down teamwork roles before you start, agree on how each person will participate. Everybody must have an active role.
  2. After you take the ball apart:
    1. How many pieces are in the puzzle?
    2. How many unique pieces are there in the puzzle? (according to shape, color doesn't matter)
    3. Make a rough sketch of each unique piece and assign each one a unique identifier.

  3. Write an algorithm using your part names above to assemble a puzzle ball from completely separate pieces.

  4. Practice a teamwork approach to putting the ball back together again. Record your fastest time. ___________ What collaboration strategy allows you to assemble the puzzle quickly?

  5. Reflect: What worked well as a team? What could you have done better?

NOTE: in a room full of high school students given these puzzle balls, without making a plan only about 50% can figure out how to put them back together within one class period.
