Puzzle Ball challenge
Follow these directions:
- The challenge has 2 parts:
- to create clear directions on how to put one of these puzzle balls together.
- to put the puzzle ball together (after practicing) as a team in less than 2 minutes.
DO NOT TAKE THE BALL APART UNTIL YOU HAVE A PLAN FOR HOW YOU WILL PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN.
- Write down your strategy for taking the ball apart in a way that you will be able to put it back together again.
- What is your plan?
- Write down teamwork roles before you start, agree on how each person will participate. Everybody must have an active role.
- After you take the ball apart:
- How many pieces are in the puzzle?
- How many unique pieces are there in the puzzle? (according to shape, color doesn't matter)
- Make a rough sketch of each unique piece and assign each one a unique identifier.
- Write an algorithm using your part names above to assemble a puzzle ball from completely separate pieces.
- Practice a teamwork approach to putting the ball back together again. Record your fastest time. ___________ What collaboration strategy allows you to assemble the puzzle quickly?
- Reflect: What worked well as a team? What could you have done better?
NOTE: in a room full of high school students given these puzzle balls, without making a plan only about 50% can figure out how to put them back together within one class period.
